Medicinal Forest Garden Trust

We have added another Tree Information Sheet to our page on medicinal trees on the Holt Wood Herbs website. This information sheet is all about flowers and leaves from the Small-leaved Lime (Tilia cordata). This Lime is a fast-growing tree which needs active management in limited spaces through coppicing or pollarding. The rewards are wonderful scented flowers to make a stress-busting tea. Our Tree Information Sheets can be viewed on the web site or we can send you a printed set for £10 donation to the Medicinal Forest Garden Trust.

Projects at Holt Wood

There are always improvements to make at Holt Wood. This year, we have been improving our shade house to help propagation of medicinal trees and shrubs. Anne is planning more cuttings and seeds to be available to our visitors on courses. See her blog for more on this.

November 2019 Wood Working Day

You are most welcome to join us for our next Wood Working Day on Saturday 2 November  2019, from 10.30 – 3.00. Spend a whole day at Holt Wood and join in with our maintenance, harvesting and projects. For maintenance you might be helping to clear brambles, gather bracken, mulch around trees, collect logs and other activities to keep the wood healthy. If we are harvesting then we are likely to be cutting branches for bark or collecting leaves and fruit. Extra projects are varied, from clearing paths and digging ditches to planting herbs and building seats. Boots advised as ground is uneven. Booking in advance is essential as places are limited. To book a free place, email us at info@holtwoodherbs.com

What is Holt Wood all about

Holt Wood has been transformed from a redundant conifer plantation into a delightful medicinal forest garden. It is near the River Torridge in Devon and is an innovative project where cultivation of medicinal trees and shrubs is being explored. The site has been planted with a range of native and introduced medicinal plants since felling the conifers in 2005. Through Holt Wood Herbs, courses are being offered to show how to design a medicinal forest garden and ways that the abundant harvest can be used for health and well-being.
